* WTF is this?

My name is Casey Collier and I occasionally make music some people enjoy. This place is where I post some of it.

It started long ago… old toys, Fisher Price™ turntables, microphones, Casio™ and cassette players. Some things captured and saved, some not – random nights on benders in The Room. As time passed things focused, toys got more expensive and I kept working. I still make noise. Some as “song” some as “sketch” or “experiment” … whatever. Only a handful even know of my work, really. I’m a bit quiet about my art, maybe reclusive too or obsessed with ideas of D.I.Y. underground music culture. Who knows.

Anyhow, these days staying in touch and sharing creative content is so easy. I’ve asked myself – Why not? – for the last time. Using new methods of distribution, I’ll take a chance and see what happens.

You can also find my self-released content over here.

* Who cares?

Beyond just me, I’m not sure anyone other than my friends and family will care about this effort. This place is just meant to preserve and archive my material for easy browsing and listening. I’m hoping to include production notes and tape scans where I can and as I have the time.

* What kinda quality are we talking about?

Pre-1993 the material was recorded on an old AIWA™ 2-track cassette deck with variable pitch control. Post-1992 sessions involved multiple tape players/walkmen, but final mixdown was done on the almighty Tascam 464 using SP modes on 30/60/90min tapes. Anything post-1999 is recorded direct to disk using anything from an old Creative™ AWE64 Gold card to a Tascam™ FW1884 (24-bit/96kHz). I’ve had a few analog mixers over the years, one or two really sucked – I’ve tried to correct the EQ where possible but sometimes it’s just G.I.G.O. I’m not getting stuck on “quality” here because it’s bollocks. In theory, the quality of the tape recordings themselves are part of the character of the sound. If you’re a tape hiss snob, leave now.

The audio players on the archives are streaming 192kbps MP3′s. I’m currently not offering most content as downloads here. But, if you want the files bad enough, you’ll get ‘em. At least just give me credit if you post elsewhere or whatever.

* Why can’t I download everything?

Will keep you posted…

* Can I order real CD’s somewhere?

Depends on what you mean by “real”. I don’t have many things released by a proper label.

I did a track called ‘Kaylek 2‘ for the American Breakbeat compilation under the alias buUg.

I also did the ‘Maggot Infested Steak Mix‘ for the RKK13CD compilation under the alias N/A.

You can find them both over on my Soundcloud page.

I had a review of a stack of my CD’s by Keith Whitman in Urb Magazine back around 2000.

Professionally speaking, I did allot of “intro” music for Flash websites and interstitials in the early 2000′s. Stuff for Lockheed Martin, ARINC, Nike, Zurich, etc. I’ll post those here eventually.

Anyway…

Providing you with my own CD releases isn’t a problem. I’m happy to ship them to your door. Email me. All my stuff is Red Book Standard Audio. They’re made by hand in small batches.

* Why isn’t everything here already?

I’m still working on the Audio Archive Project™. I’d say I’m about 75% of the way finished with the process of actually digitizing all of the old cassettes. I just need to upload them all. It’s really been more work than I expected and at times it can be emotionally draining. So I tend to work in weekend bursts.

For content that is already digital, I’ll just be posting the tracks when the mood strikes me. I need to sort some of the old artwork.

* What kind of gear and stuff do you use?

I use anything I can get my hands on. I like software and hardware. I’m a gear hound, but not really a gear snob or super-tech. I think any sound has potential. It’s an exciting time in history for sound design and personal audio production.

I’ll elaborate on my Gear List if people request it.
